What is SmartLipo?

Smart Lipo, also known as laser-liposuction, laser lipo and lunchtime lipo, is the latest fat removal treatment. The technique was first discovered in Europe and has recently become FDA approved for use in the USA. The technique has been used for the past 10 years in South America, Europe and Asia. The procedure involves the use of a laser that dissolves the fat and tightens the surrounding skin. The procedure is done in an office and does not require the use of a general anesthetic.

SmartLipo is usually done in a doctor's office or clinic. Before the procedure, the doctor will mark the targeted areas and a local anesthetic is used to numb the area. A very small cannula, or tube, approximately 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm in diameter containing a laser fiber is inserted into the skin. The cannula is moved back and forth delivering the laser's energy to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and easily drain away. The fluid released from the fat cells is removed by the body’s natural waste system. The laser also causes small blood vessels to coagulate (gel) immediately on contact, thus resulting in less bleeding and swelling. The laser also affects the collagen in the skin which later causes the skin to tighten and shrink gradually over the next 6-8 weeks. Each session take about 30-45 mins.

SmartLipo (Smart Lipo) vs Traditional Liposuction

Traditional liposuction is often done under general anesthesia. Loose skin remains where fat is sucked out. A 4-to 6-mm tube sucks out solid fat which inevitably causes tissue trauma. Traditional liposuction uses a vacuum with a metal tube attached, which the doctor moves back and forth manually. Because the human hand cannot be very precise, there is bleeding, swelling and destruction of tissue. This causes pain and bruising resulting in downtime from work usually up to a week.

SmartLipo, is done with local anesthesia. A 1-mm tube fitted with laser melts fat with little trauma. Due to the cannula's small size, Smartlipo™ is a minimally invasive procedure. The laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact, resulting in less bleeding, swelling and bruising, - and a quicker recovery time than conventional liposuction. Because general anesthesia is unnecessary, the procedure is very safe with only minimal side effects. Within the next 6-8 weeks, the skin and surrounding area will remodel and adjust to the body contour. This is a gradual process and the best results are seen after 2 months. The downtime is minimal and the patient can usually return to work within 24 hours.
