Can Anyone Get Liposuction?

Women and Men over the age of 18 and who are in good health are candidates for liposuction. It should be noted that liposuction is not a solution for people who are obese or have large amounts of fat. Since liposuction is most effective when combined with a lifestyle of good nutrition, diet, and exercise, those individuals who practice this lifestyle or are willing to alter their lifestyle to a healthier regiment will see the best results.

A good candidate for liposuction should have realistic expectations about the results of this procedure as well as these basic qualities:

  • Average or only slightly above-average weight
  • Firm, elastic skin
  • In good overall health
  • Concentrated pockets of fat that do not respond well to diet and exercise

Who Should Not Have Liposuction?

  • Women who are pregnant or breast feeding
  • Men and women who suffer from Insulin dependant diabetes
  • Patients with a history or high risk of stroke
  • Patients with a history or high risk of blood clots
  • Patients on multiple medications for heart disease.
  • Patients with autoimmune diseases.

Patients with poor skin quality (cellulite) are not good candidates for liposuction because they may develop skin irregularities due to under- or over-correction of localized fat deposits. Age is generally not a major consideration when discussing liposuction; however, older patients often have less elasticity in their skin and thus may not achieve the same benefits of liposuction that a younger patient with tighter skin might achieve.

You will be disappointed if you expect liposuction to be an effective means to lose weight permanently. Liposuction is not proven to be an effective treatment for obesity. If your skin does not have good elasticity, then you must expect there to be some degree of a slightly wrinkled appearance. However in many cases, patients with poor skin elasticity are very happy with their new shape despite the slight wrinkled appearance of the skin.
