Acne Treatment

Acne is a skin condition that is most common during adolescence, affecting more than 80% of teenagers, but can affect adults as well. For most people, acne diminishes over time and tends to disappear, or at least decrease, after one reaches his or her early twenties. There is, however, no way to predict how long it will take for it to disappear entirely, and some individuals may continue to suffer from acne decades later, into their thirties and forties and even beyond.

Acne Symptoms

The most common form of acne is known as "acne vulgaris", meaning "common acne." Excessive secretion of oils from the sebaceous glands accompanies the plugging of the pores with naturally occurring dead skin cells blocking hair follicles. Acne typically begins just after puberty, making itself known in the form of blackheads, whiteheads, pustules, inflamed bumps and cysts.

These lesions primarily flare-up on the face, chest and back though legs, arms and other areas are affected. Severity of the condition varies, and acne symptoms can mimic those of other conditions and diseases.

Acne Scars

The presence of acne can be both physically and emotionally debilitating. Even worse is when acute inflammatory acne evolves into permanent scars. Often active acne can damage the skin leaving deep pitted scars and craters. When this happens over a large area, as on the cheeks, there can be a significant loss of volume and collapse of skin and soft tissue. There are many different acne treatment options available for the improvement of acne and acne scars. The following are just some acne treatments availble:

  • Prescription Skin Care
  • Chemical Peels
  • Fraxel Laser
  • Laser Resurfacing
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Phototherapy
  • Punch Grafts
  • Fillers
  • Fat Transfer

It is best to contact a dermatologist or skin specialist who can meet with you and evaluate your condition. Today acne treatment procedures are advanced and in the hands of the right professional, one can have excellent results. Anyone who is prone to developing scars should seek treatment at the onset of acne.
